Owner 1932: Gabriel Kuhl

Gabriel Kuhl was a butcher. He and his wife Hannchen died in the thirties in Unsleben and are buried in the cemetery there.

The house was taken over by his son Richard (1891) and his family. Richard was also butcher and did kosher butchering. He together with his wife Frieda (1892) and the children Klara (1922), Leo (1949 and Hermann (1933) have been deported in 1942 via Würzburg to Izbica.

The house was then taken over by Erwin Bardroff who in his active life was working in the nearby granary of the Naumann family. In his late years he functioned as a housekeeper for the synagogue.

owner 1932: Leopold Brandus

Leopold Brandus (1899) already died at age 32 in 1931 and left behind his wife Mali and two daughters, Klara (1927) and Doris (1929). In the same house also lived Leopold ́s single brother Julius (1905), his father Siegmund, who died in 1936 in Unsleben. The Brandus family was cattle traders, Julius also traded with machines.

Mali together with her daughters Klara and Doris and her brother­in­law Julius emigrated in the last days of 1937 to Montevideo/Uruguay.

Heinemann Kuhl

The house originally has been acquired by Alois Stockheimer and later by his daughter sold to Karlein.
Heineman Kuhl (1865) was horse trader and lived together with his son Herbert (1906) and his son Justin(1904) and his family in house no. 15 (now Schlossgasse 7). Justin traded agricultural and household machines.
Heinemann Kuhl emigrated with son Herbert to the CSSR in 1938. Justin emigrated with his wife Marie (1911) and son Hans Max (1935) in 1938 to New York/USA.

Owner 1932: Karoline Liebenthal

In that house the Liebenthal family had a cheese making trade. The young families did take over the Fa. Zschökel, which has been founded in 1892 in Leipzig by their uncle Hermann, transferred it in 1914 to Unsleben and erected a factory and in 1928 a villa for four families. After their emigration Hermann Müller carried on there with fabrication of lemonade.
After the war the house was taken over by the Koch­family, who enlarged the building for a shoe business. Later they converted the building for a drug store. Nowadays an office for physiotherapy is located there. Karoline Liebenthal, whose husband Adolf died already in 1923, was able to emigrate via Havanna into the USA in 1938.

Owner 1932: Emil Brandis

Emil Brandis(1878) living in no. 11 had two sons, Adolf(1903 and Justin(1906), his wife Rinetta (1878) died already in 1926. The place next to her in the Unsleben cemetery did Emil Brandis reserve for himself.

In July 1934 Adolf bought a garden, which has been destroyed during one night.. Adolf filed a declaration, which also was directed against members of the SA. During the night of July 14/15 members of the SA demonstrated in front of the house, three windows were broken, a window shutter has been damaged and the door to the house pressed in. In that moment Justin, the younger brother of Adolf, fired twice out of a Browning­pistol. Against him a sentence has been demanded. Both brothers have been arrested in the jail in Neustadt. Adolf pointed out, that he did not blame members of the SA for the damage. On July 17 about 100, mainly younger people, demonstrated in front of the jail. The head of the county office was told that demonstrations would be continued until the two Jews would be deported into the KZ of Dachau. He therefor ordered the transfer to Schweinfurt.

On July 27 Adolf and Justin after consultation with the county office of the NSDAP were released under the condition not to return to Unsleben. They settled in Meiningen and emigrated in the USA. Her father sold the business place to Albert Mölter and finally moved to Leipzig from where he was deported to Izbica. According to an information of the mayor Albert Mölter bought his Emmentaler cheese in 1938 from the firm Brandis & Oberbrunner in Meiningen.

The history of the family:

Emil married in 1902 Rinetta Mittel (1878). They had two sons, Adolf and Justin.

Adolf was born in Unsleben 1903, 04/23, married 1929, 05/28 Ruth Rosenbaum, born 1908, 06/16 in Detmold. They had two children, Rolf and Inge.

Rolf was born 1930, 04/06 in Unsleben, got married 1954, 05/02 to Marlen Antler, born 1932, 10/21 in Chicago. They have three children, Alan, Marion and Judith.

Inge, born 1934, 11/25 in Meiningen got married to Philipp Sokol, they have two children. Andrea and Debbie.

Justin was born in Unsleben 1906, 05/02, got married 1945, 11/10 to Paula Lang. They have a son Kenneth, born 1947, 05/02. Kenneth visited several times Unsleben since the turn of the century. Kenneth married Amy Barnard, they have three children, Aaron, Naomi, and Dov.
